However you choose to enjoy the evening, the unquestionable climax is when the bells ring midnight. The tradition is Spain is to eat a grape with each of the twelve chimes, which is said to bring good luck for the year ahead. Another tip for a lucky year ahead is to wear red underwear… shhh…. don’t tell anyone. Except they probably already know!
The local tradition is to get together with friends and family to celebrate New Year´s Eve at home with a lavish, home cooked dinner. Seafood is popular, and of course plenty good wine. Another popular option is to get together in a restaurant, where you can share the ritual of standing to eat the midnight grapes followed by the clinking of cava glasses and a hearty toast.
Official celebrations in Palma usually culminate with a firework display above the cathedral, and people gather in Plaça de Cort to eat their twelve grapes. However, this year´s event has been cancelled due to covid precautions.
If you wish to enjoy a night out, do make your arrangements as soon as possible, as the best places are sure to be fully booked. A couple of events on our radar in Palma´s port area include the Hard Rock Café , who will host a party with live music by Tina Turner cover band Charlie Starr, leading up to the midnight bells. The elegant Rosa del Mar restaurant and club will be holding a special New Year’s Eve event with a lavish menu.
