A treat you can’t miss while you are in Barcelona
If you are moored on the Catalan coast over Easter , you will notice that the pastry shops are full of cakes with chocolate eggs or even huge compositions made of chocolate.
The Mona de Pascua is a typical tradition of Catalonia, Valencia, and Murcia , related to the Christian religion. It symbolizes that the abstinence from Lent is over and that now it’s time to enjoy!
Local tradition says that the godfather or grandfather should gift one to their godchildren or grandchildren on Easter Sunday, so they can eat it with the family on Easter Monday. According to historians, Monas date back from as far as the 15 th century. The word “mona” could be a little confusing, as in Spanish it means “female monkey” but there are no monkeys in the Mediterranean coast! Actually, the word “mona” comes from the Arabic word “mûna” which means a gift or a provision of food. It was a present from the workers who were of Arabic origin to their lords to celebrate that Lent ended.
Nowadays, you can find any kind of monas that you can imagine. From simple cakes with a chocolate egg on the top to amazing chocolate constructions . You can find huge chocolate eggs, castles, trains, and even animals or famous people.
If you are mooring in Barcelona , we also recommend a visit to the Chocolate Museum . It shows a tour through the history of chocolate and there are many chocolate creations to see. And if you would like your own Mona onboard leave it to your Evolution team to organize for you.
