Taking a wander through the streets of Palma, you’ll see that the colourful street lights have been switched on, shop windows sparkle with seasonal displays, and, the iconic Christmas market in Plaça Mayor is now in full swing. Tradition and festive good cheer weave together among the many stalls which offer gifts and decorations, as well as themed activities and events for all the family to enjoy. Other popular Christmas markets are located in Plaça de la Porta Pintada, Plaça d’Espanya and Plaça del Mercat.
The magnificent la Seu Cathedral is decked out in festive finery, and a nativity scene depicts the traditional story of the birth of Christ. A Midnight Mass held on the 24 th December is one of the most important events of the religious calendar and is always well attended.
A popular Christmas treat to look out for is turrón , a nougat is made with egg whites, honey, almonds or other nuts and sugar. Other Spanish sweets are mantecados and polvorones , often served at the end of the Christmas meal with a glass of sparkling cava.
