The turning of the annual cycle is recognised in different moments of the year by many diverse global cultures. For the USA and Canada, one of the main annual events is Thanksgiving , which will be celebrated this year on the 25 th November.
Thanksgiving is said to have originated in 1621s with a harvest celebration shared by British colonists and the native Wampanoag people, after reaching an alliance. Far from the feast it is now associated with, this was a time of fasting and praying. It wasn’t until 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln instituted a national celebration across all the states that the date took on its contemporary flavour.
Traditional foods are now a big part of the holiday . A typical meal involves roast turkey with all the trimmings: gravy, chestnut stuffing, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes. For dessert, a pie is often prepared. Seasonal ingredients such as pumpkin, apple and sweet potato are especially popular.
