LA CRUZADA: Swimming for humanitarian change

An intrepid swimmer, José Manuel López is no stranger to challenging the waves to raise awareness and funds for this cause. His latest challenge is ” LA CRUZADA “, a non-stop swimming from Mallorca to Barcelona.

The crossing from Mallorca to Barcelona is a popular route to reach the Balearics from mainland Spain. With regular winds, a small sailing boat can traverse this stretch of the Mediterranean in about 35 hours , and a high speed yacht in under 10 hours . Each year at Evolution Yacht Agents we accompany many yachts from our main offices located at these two destinations by providing a wide range of services , from customs clearance and logistics to provisions and interior supplies . However, when we were approached with the invitation to support social worker and sportsman José Manuel López’s upcoming record-breaking attempt to swim – yes, swim from Mallorca to Barcelona this July, we could only say YES.

López describes himself as an insatiable adventurer with a passion for sports and social activism. An integrative social worker in a psychiatric hospital in Palma, he is also involved with sports projects that have a humanitarian orientation. In 2013 he participated in setting up the organisation  I’mpossible365 , dedicated to increasing the inclusion of people with disabilities to practice sports , and obtaining the necessary specialised equipment to facilitate this. López firmly believes that sport is vital for our physical health and mental health, and his solidary actions are tirelessly directed towards increasing opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sporting activities.

An intrepid swimmer, López is no stranger to challenging the waves to raise awareness and funds for this cause. In 2008 he swam the Strait of Gibraltar , and in 2010 he crossed the Balearics, swimming, running and by canoe. He scooped  World Record titles  in 2013 for 30 consecutive days of Ironman triathlons, and in 2014 for achieving an incredible 90 Ironman triathlons in one year. However, this latest  challenge  of swimming non-stop from Mallorca to Barcelona will put him firmly in another league as the first person to achieve such a feat – if he succeeds! Is it actually possible to swim non-stop for 72 hours, without sleep and facing extreme temperatures? At Evolution , we wish him well and send our support for this new adventure , and for the humanitarian impulse of contributing towards building a better world that inspires him and his team to keep striving forward and paving the way for more people to experience a new possible.
