Surviving Christmas far from home is a challenge that every superyacht crew experiences at least once.
Christmas is that period of the year when people share happiness and joy with their loved ones . Although as a superyacht crew , this time of the year could be somehow challenging , especially your first 25 th of December far from family and home.
To help ease the pain of being away during the festive period when the family gathers to create memories, with the help of The Superyacht Content , we have prepared a list of 5 things to be grateful for if you are working on board during Christmas .
1.-The most missed one of the family gatherings.
You might feel lonely or homesick , but we can guarantee that your family back home will be missing you , thinking of you and talking about you.
Even if they are often used to only seeing you a few times a year, on these festive dates you will have a special spot on their minds .
Your family and friends are probably very proud of what you are doing and the experiences you are having. So, show appreciation for them and make time to at least make a short call. Even if it’s just for 5 minutes, it will make you feel much happier about being away.
2.-Bon Appétit!
If you are a foodie , surviving the festivities on board shouldn’t be that difficult. Sure, is not your mum’s special Christmas dish, but you are about to eat a dinner made by a professional chef! Very few people can get to experience a meal of this quality without paying its price.
So, appreciate this delicious opportunity and don’t forget to offer some help to the chef as they are working on Christmas day too!
3.-Sails up and full throttle!
It might be obvious, and not feel that special if you are a seasoned yachtie… but you are on board a superyacht !
There are currently only around 37.000 people working within the superyacht industry . So, you are one of the lucky ones to get to experience a Christmas on board a superyacht !
Even if you are not happy about being away from your loved ones, think that you are experiencing something exclusive . Embrace it, and find the positive side of it, as it won’t be forever. It’s what you are doing right now, so Carpe Diem!
4.-Christmas around the world
Maybe you are on a refit at a shipyard, or maybe you are in a country you never dreamed of visiting , or perhaps you have your guests on board and are somewhere warm. Wherever you are, it’s usually something different than your typical Christmas .
If you are off this Christmas, take advantage of visiting the country you are in , venture into local markets and traditions and try something new . You might be away from home this Christmas, but make sure that you come back with a nice story to tell next year.
If you are working, make sure that you take a break to go outside , walk the surroundings and celebrate with your team , as they are also missing their loved ones. Make the most of it by sharing memories !
5.-Money, Money
As much as everyone who works in the industry loves their job, there is a huge quantity of people who get on it for the money . The superyacht crew is well looked after, and this is certainly something to be grateful for. A good wage , accommodation , food, and toiletries are covered while working on board a superyacht. If you ever happen to leave the industry, we can guarantee that you will miss this.
