The alluring world of Spanish wines

Spain is internationally renowned for its wide variety of quality wines.

Spanish Mediterranean climate and varied terrains have been home to many different varieties of grape and centres for viniculture since before the Roman Empire , perhaps dating back to the arrival of the Phoenicians in Andalucía, in 1100BC. Fast forward a few millennia, and enjoying a fine wine to toast an evening sunset, or to accompany a meal, is one of the many pleasures that you can indulge in during your stay.

So, how does one go about navigating this rich labyrinth of Spanish wines ? A useful indication can be gleaned through the different classifications that locate each wine within its geographical region and sphere of prestige.

Starting from the top, the Vino de Pago classification is awarded to the best specific vineyards or wine estates in the country. Only 17 vineyards have earned this accolade, such as Prado de Irache and Otazu in Navarra, Campo de la Guardia and Pago Florentino in Castilla la Mancha, and Los Balagueses in Valencia.

Next up is Denominación de Origen Calificada , which was earned by the Rioja territory in 1991 and by the Priorat in 2000. Denominación de Origen is a wider category, yet still with rigorously regulated quality control. This also refers to the wine-growing region and includes familiar names such as D.O. Ribera del Duero in Castilla León and sparkling favourite D.O. Cava in Catalunya.

The Indicación Geográfica Protegida indicates tables wines that don’t attain the standards of a Denominación Original, but which are nevertheless recognised as being produced by in a geographical area with favourable characteristics.

At the bottom of the rung you’ll find the vinos de mesa , straightforward table wines whose vintage, grape varieties or region of origin may not be specified, but which are often extremely drinkable !

As for the question of which wines are the best, the ultimate decision is to be made by your own palate
