Spain Activates the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)

On October 12, Spain began implementing the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) marking the first step in the European Union’s rollout of its new automated border control system for non-EU travelers.

The EES will gradually replace the traditional passport stamping process across all Schengen countries, with the aim of becoming fully operational by April 10, 2026.

What is the EES?

The Entry/Exit System is an advanced digital platform that records information about non-Schengen visitors every time they enter or leave the Schengen Area.
It captures:

  • Passport data
  • Facial image
  • Fingerprints (for visa-exempt travellers)
  • Date and place of entry or exit

If entry is refused, that information will also be registered.

Progressive Implementation in Spain

The rollout across airports and seaports in Spain is being implemented progressively, depending on each location.
During the six-month transition period, crew members should expect slightly longer border checks, as biometric data is gradually collected and both the new Entry/Exit System (EES) and traditional passport stamping coexist.

Status definitions used in the table below:

  • Partially operational: EES is already in use for real passenger flows, including biometric data capture, but not yet across all control points or traffic streams. Manual passport stamping may still apply in parallel.
  • In progressive deployment: Infrastructure and procedures are being introduced in phases; operational use may still be limited or inconsistent.
  • Installation phase:Ā Equipment installation and testing ongoing; not yet operational.
  • Not active yet: No confirmed operational deployment at this stage.

Refer to the table below for an overview of the current implementation status by location.

Why it Matters for Crew Members

The EES will affect port clearances and travel planning by providing accurate, real-time data. Crew members may be asked to present guarantee letters to comply with port and immigration requirements.
This new system represents a major step forward in smart border management, ensuring faster, safer, and more reliable travel across Europe.
