Attention Chief Engineers: A big change is coming: the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will ban the use and storage of fire-extinguishers containing perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) starting January 1, 2026. This applies to SOLAS Chapter II-2 and High-Speed Craft Codes, affecting many yachts with foam-based systems.
PFOS are harmful to health and the environment. It’s often in Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) for fighting liquid fires. Global treaties like the Stockholm Convention are phasing them out.
Why the ban matters for yachts:
The rule limits PFOS to no more than 10 mg/kg (0.001% by weight). It covers fixed and portable systems. For yachts:
- New Builds (delivered after January 1, 2026): Must be PFOS-free.
- Existing Yachts: Comply by your first survey (annual, periodical, or renewal) after the date.
If your yacht has older foams, they likely contain PFOS. Non-compliance could lead to fines or issues in ports, especially in the EU.
- Check your systems: Review extinguishers and foams. Get manufacturer declarations or lab tests to confirm PFOS levels.
- Replace and dispose: Switch to IMO-approved, PFOS-free alternatives. Dispose of old extinguishers and update your Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) if required.
- Plan Ahead: Order new extinguishers with time since supply may be affected as we get close to January 1st
Future rules may target other PFAS like PFOA, so we will keep you informed.
