Demystifying EORI Numbers: Navigating the Essentials for International Trade

In the world of international trade, an EORI number is more than just a combination of letters and digits. It's a vital identifier that facilitates smooth customs procedures and ensures compliance with regulations.

But what exactly is an EORI number, and why is it important?

What is an EORI Number?

EORI stands for Economic Operator Registration and Identification. Essentially, it's a unique code assigned to businesses and individuals engaged in importing or exporting goods within the European Union (EU) and its customs territory. This code helps customs authorities track and monitor these entities' movements of goods, enabling efficient customs clearance processes. An EORI, or Economic Operator Registration and Identification Number, is a passport for businesses and individuals importing and exporting goods to or from the European Union (EU).

Below, we’ll outline when did why EORIs become essential in your customs operations in Spain.

Who Needs an EORI Number in Spain?

EORI numbers are necessary for businesses and individuals importing and exporting goods to or from Spain. In order to be able to send goods outside the EU from Spain, the exporter must have an EORI number to carry out the operation. Likewise, in order to import goods from a non-EU country into Spain, the importer in Spain must have a valid EORI.

Therefore, if your superyacht has EU status and has commercial activity in Europe, you may be interested in obtaining this identification number.

You do not have an EORI number valid in Spain or do not want to request it in order not to lose the special conditions of the non-EU vessel? Evolution can help you.

If you are planning a specific customs operation and do not have a valid EORI number in Spain (or you do not want to request it so as not to compromise your non-EU vessel status), Evolution, as a registered company with a valid EORI number, can assist you with import or export formalities in Spain as long as they are consigned in our name and certain conditions are met.

Can the EORI number be shared with third parties?

Only if you are acting as the importer of the goods. For this reason when we are asked for our EORI number this can only be given away if we act as importer of the goods, as if not when customs does reconciliation these do not match.

Why is it Important?

Facilitates Customs Procedures: When importing or exporting goods within the EU, an EORI number is essential for completing customs declarations.

Streamlines Trade Operations: With a valid EORI number, businesses can benefit from simplified customs procedures, reducing administrative burdens and speeding up the movement of goods across borders.

Enables Risk Management: Customs authorities use EORI numbers to assess the risk associated with each transaction and prioritize inspections accordingly. This helps enhance security and prevent illegal activities such as smuggling.

How to Obtain an EORI Number?

Getting an EORI number is usually a straightforward process that involves applying to the customs authorities in the EU member state where your business is established (for this reason it is important to note that it is interesting for European vessels with commercial activity). Once issued, the EORI number remains valid for all customs-related activities within the EU.
